I am sure if you are reading this blog, you should love searching. So today I offering a new (somewhat geeky) way for you to search: using a command line. Basically it works like this: (1) Provide a search term; (2) Provide a shortcut that will tell the tool which search engine to use to search for the provided term. The search tool Accessible via: Serchilo Web tool, FireFox search plugin Katapulco Web tool Ubiquity FireFox addon Serchilo Serchilo is a highly customizable search tool that can be used to quickly use any search engine or site. [g seo] You can see which commands are available while you type the query: More things to take note of: Install the search plugin into your browser. Browse existing commands by category ; Add great commands, edit not so great ones; Register at the site for more handy features (define a default keyword which Serchilo will use if you forgot it, define personalized commands, etc). Katapulco Katapulco is an awesome search tool that gives access to over 90 search engines from a single search command line. It works similarly to Serchilo but it requires to input the search engine shortcut in a separate field. For example, this command will redirect to Google search for [SEO]: More things to take note of: Customize the tool by adding any search engine or site ; Suggest your own search engine or site for inclusion. Ubiquity The only reason why I am mentioning Ubiquity as the last one is that I already reviewed the tool on SEJ , so most of our readers must be already aware of the tool. Still, I couldn’t help mentioning it again because of its great features. Ubiquity is a FireFox addon that enables you to quicker access and complete multiple tasks you do daily (including search of course). Besides being highly customizable and really feature rich, it also has quite a few great plugins that allow to search and preview multiple results on multiple useful search engines including Google Trends, Digg, Urban Dictionary, Compete traffic stats, etc: Check out the SEO Tools guide at Search Engine Journal . 3 Ways to Search Using Command-Line

I find it sad that many people are absolutely unaware of Google advanced operators, or even if they do know about the advanced search, they never use it. I for one use Google advanced operators all the time: when doing on-page diagnostics; searching for backlink opportunities, doing competitive research, etc, etc So in this post I decided to share the best tools and tutorials that will help you remember and learn to use the advanced search (if you are not using it already): Advanced search

Life is a funny thing! As humans we all want to be successful and happy. Each year goes by (faster than we would like) full of goals, failures and accomplishments. Ultimately it is up to us as individuals to reach for the stars and fulfill our desires. Below you will find a list of five things that you can do to end this year in a way that will make you happy, successful and ready for the New Year! But remember, it is up to you and no one else to make it happen. If you are reading this, more than likely you are a Business, SEO, or Social Media minded person; and for that very reason I have focused the items below on you. 1. Life – The number one item that you need to do today to end this year with a bang is to evaluate your life. The reason why this is number one on my list is because if you can’t take care of yourself, then how are you going to take care of your family, job, or business? Focus some time today on going back through notes, files, and papers, really anything that you can find that has your 2009 resolutions or goals that you set earlier this year. If you can’t find anything or you didn’t put anything together then that is just fine, stay with me though. Next thing you need to do is review your resolutions or goals.

Like James Morris once said, “ There is no secret sauce in SEO “. Really, if you can allow the time for some studying, you are most likely to be able to do it yourself. What you really need is (1) to understand the good old KISS principle (just keep it as simple as possible), (2) take any rumors and myths (even if they come from trustful sources) with a grain of salt and (3) bookmark some easy-to-implement, step-by-step tutorials. This post is an effort to give you a clearly defined and easy to comprehend guide on the steps to optimize your business for local search : enjoy! I have taken the following steps to promote my business in local search: I have displayed my full business contact information clearly on my site. I am taking advantage of these placements to make my contact information stand out and easy to find: Title of the page (especially for the contact page); Meta description of the contact page and “About us” page (to be displayed in SERPs) Bottom of each page throughout the site ( bottom of the page is the traditional placement for contact information, so most visitors will first look for it there – I don’t make my visitors search for my contact info; it is right there where they are used to seeing it). My site Contact and About-us pages contain sufficient information on where my business is located as well as phone numbers including local area (search engines are often believed to associate local area code as the local search rankings factor ); thus, I don’t need to add “nofollow” attribute to those pages; I have made sure my business domain WHOIS information lists my business mail address and contact phone number; I have the list of my local competitors and have researched their local promotion tactics (I know where their local backlinks come from). My business is listed in the regional sections of popular directories like BOTW and Business.com . I claimed my business and edited my listing in local search engines like Yahoo! Local , YellowPages and CitySearch . For international businesses: I have compiled the list of most powerful local search engines and claimed my business listings there. Examples of these include: 411 Canada ; Australia’s local search engine ; UK’s local search engine . I have created my business profiles at major business social networks and included its address there (examples: CrunchBase for technology companies; Facebook pages, etc) I have found and built relations with powerful local bloggers and journalists and get featured by them; I have made my site more accessible for mobile phones . I understand how important it is to optimize my site for mobile searches. I have read and thought over these awesome guide on local search optimization: Local Search Ranking Factors (2009 edition!) Local search guide ; Facebook Pages & Local Search Engine Optimization ; Local Search : User Recommendations Make Your Business Money Enhance Your Google Local Listings 3 Keys To Success For Local Search SEO Did I miss anything? Although local shopping search engine Milo.com has been around for two years already, it is only now that the site is going full blast as it leaves beta stage. Before you start thinking that Milo.com is just another local shopping search engine that will only tell you specific online deals, well actually it does more than that. Milo also gives you available inventories of products available on stores near your location. Sounds good, right? Wait, there’s more. As it leave beta and since real-time search is all the rage right now, Milo.com is also rolling out a search interface that shows real-time product inventory results. If you’re familiar with another product search engine Kayak, well it’s almost similar in features. And like other consumer online shopping sites, Milo.com gives you full details of the products you want to purchase including reviews from other buyers. While this is useful when shopping for products, it would have been more useful if the reviews featured are actually that of the store where a user purchased the product. It’s more appropriate that way since Milo.com is supposed to be a tool for finding the nearest local stores that offer consumer products. Still, it’s a good site and the real-time feature is a welcome treat. However, we could not discount the fact that Milo.com is up against major search engines who offer similar search verticals. Although real-time results and local store finder are not yet in the major search engines’ agenda. Well except for Google which is reportedly preparing to offer offer product inventories of local stores in product searches. In the meantime, check out Milo.com and enjoy it for what it offers especially if you’re still rushing on your Christmas shopping chores. Check out the SEO Tools guide at Search Engine Journal . Welcome ot another edition of ‘ 7 Days of Search and Social ‘ – I hope you are well and getting well into another week in the trenches. It was a somewhat quiet week out there as far as kick ass blog posts, (although ‘Dave baiting’ is in season) but we did make up for it with a bunch of tools and even some patents of interest. Of course the big news was from the fine folks at the Googleplex with the announcement that personalized search is now default for everyone; logged in or not. Anyway, let’s get on with it shall we?
