Facebook Beats Google as the Most Visited Site on Christmas Day

In what could be a preview of an impending battle between Facebook and Google in the coming days, Facebook has beaten Google as the most visited website on both Christmas Even and Christmas Day, says a tweet from Hitwise’s Twitter account. It was the first time that Facebook become the number one site during Christmas Day. Last year it was Google as the most visited site with Facebook closely following behind. But come to think of it, it is not surprising for Facebook to be visited more both during Christmas Eve and Christmas Day since majority of people are spending their online time during those days probably greeting their Facebook contacts, sending Christmas wishes and greetings to their loved ones, friends and family who are not with them on those days. Facebook after all is more of a communication tool than Google. What made the event surprising was due to the fact that Facebook has been lagging behind both Google and Yahoo! Mail all through out the year in terms of site visits.  It only goes to show that email is a thing of the past during these days, as Facebook and perhaps other social sites like Twitter are the more preferred ways of communicating online especially during special occasions. Most importantly it is also quite surprising that online users still visited Facebook despite the slew of privacy issues that came out during the year. Yahoo to Shut Down MyBlogLog

Still remember MyBlogLog? Sometime in 2006, it was one of the hottest social networking tool for bloggers because of one simple reason – it allows bloggers to put a face on their blog visitors.  I remember using MyBlogLog for quite some time until Yahoo purchased it in 2007 and MyBlogLo started offering blog site analytics tools both as free and paid service. MyBlogLog was a pretty useful blog management tool back then. It’s widget feature was interesting. And it’s ability to show you blog-related trends and information was invaluable. Then somewhere along the way I lost interest in it and perhaps other users too. Although many continue to use it, somehow MyBlogLog lost its luster. Until now, ReadWriteWeb reports that Yahoo is finally shutting down MyBlogLog. Although there was no reason cited yet. Yahoo is probably just doing what is right. MyBlogLog’s lost its relevance today.  Does it also show that blogs are becoming obsolete? Perhaps yes, and perhaps no. Blog as a social networking and communication tool is no longer applicable. There’s Facebook and Twitter for that. Blogs’s uses are now reduced as a source of factual information. Going back to MyBlogLog, question now is, what will happen to the accounts of those who still use it. To blogs who rely on MyBlogLog services for their management and administration aspects?  What will happen to those paid subscribers, if there are any still? Let’s wait for official announcement from Yahoo for answers to this question. Check out the SEO Tools guide at Search Engine Journal . Yahoo to Shut Down

YouTube, Google, Facebook, Sex Top Kids’ Searches

Forget about the recent reports on most-searched terms and Twitter trending topics.  As Symantec just released a more controversial top searches report for 2009 . And this time while YouTube, Google and Facebook are the most-searched topics among teens, and so is Sex. The report, top 100 favorite search terms was based on the search tracking done by Symantec’s OnlineFamily.Norton service.  Respondents were children 18 years old and under. The study  was part the groups’ assistance to parents in monitoring their children’s online searches. In both boys and girls category “sex” emerged on top of the list at no. 4 and no. 4 respectively. Among the top searches made by boys are related to social networking sites, shopping sites and porn. While for girls, searches were either music, TV shows, movies and celebrities. Going into specific age groupings further, the study found out that kids seven and under searched more about video games while older boys did music related searches. So, if your boys and girls are not frequenting Facebook and YouTube, they are either searching for other sites related to sex and porn. How comforting, NOT! Yahoo to Connect with Facebook in 2010

Yahoo is about to do what others have been wanting to do for so long now – integrate Facebook in their online service. Just announced is Yahoo’s soon to be implementation of Facebook Connect. This practically means that once implemented you can now share Yahoo’s various content including ratings, photos, article comment and more to your Facebook streams or updates. Likewise, you can now seamlessly see your Facebook friends’ activities on your Yahoo account. The integration would also mean that you will now have an option on where to update your status message – that is either on any of the supported Yahoo properties or on Facebook instead. Although Yahoo has somewhat integrated Facebook before, it was only on the individual Yahoo account portal. This time, it will be a full integration across all Yahoo sites. Obviously, Yahoo is the one taking advantage of  Facebook’s popularity and massive userbase in this deal.  Since Bing is already ahead of  them with its Twitter integration, it is but logical for Yahoo to turn to Twitter’s closest rival – Facebook in the hopes of increasing user engagement on Yahoo’s content sites. Yahoo is set to roll out Facebook Connect in the early part of 2010. Check out the SEO Tools guide at Search Engine Journal . Yahoo to Connect with Facebook in

Gmail Users Are More Social Network Friendly

There’s an interesting findings discovered by research company Rapleaf which made a study of around 120,000 webmail accounts from users of various webmail client including aol, gmail, hotmail and yahoo. According to the report, while Gmail users are more connected and have more friends on a social network, other webmail users however maintain more social networking profiles . The Rapleaf study looked into the age, gender and social networking data of the sample population. Not quite surprisingly, the study revealed that Facebook is the most popular social network among webmail users. Surprisingly, MySpace manage to retain some popularity especially among Hotmail users despite its dwindling popularity among the general users. Twitter was also found to be popular among Gmail users, but not as popular in other social networks. The most significant findings of the study is of course on user participation in social networks. The study found out that Gmail users are more connected with their friends, meaning they interact more often despite maintaining only one social network of choice. Other webmail users on the other hand maintain several social networking profiles but don’t have as much interactions with their friends as Gmail users are. Bottomline points to the fact that Gmail users are younger and more web-savvy hence they are more active in social networking sites than the more matured Hotmail, Yahoo Mail and AOL Mail users. Google Releases the Chromium Open Source Project

For simple folks like me anticipating the release of Google Chrome OS any day now, sad to say you won’t get a taste of it at least not in a year or so. But if you’re a developer, today’s Google announcement is for you.  Google has just made its Chromium Open Source Projec t  where  the consumer-side of Chrome OS will be built, available for developers and coders. The Chromim OS project which was released just now include current code base, user interface experiments and some initial designs. If you want to take part in the development of a better and more user-focused Chrome OS, these stuff are for you. And you can be more involved in this Open Source project by joining http://chromium.org. Meanwhile, us simple Google fans would for now be contend with knowing some more details about the Google Chrome OS and why Google is building it, if in case you still don’t know the reasons why. The main reason according to the Google Blog post is to make it faster to connect to the Internet starting from the time you boot up your computer (whether you are using those ultra-fast machines or a measly Acer netbook). The Google folks involved with the development of the Chrome OS have this notion that the major reason why we power up our computer is to connect to the internet – check emails, do social networking stuff, twitter and all.  And that if there is no Internet, we might not use the computer anymore. Somehow this is true. And so instead of using a separate OS to boot up the computer and go through all the processes that leads you to the process of firing up your browser, why not just eliminate the process where the PC’s OS does it work and make the web browser the computer OS as well. And that is the long and short of it – Google Chrome OS, if you don’t know yet is going to be your computer’s OS and web browser. Just imagine how faster it would be to connect to the Internet once Chrome OS is available for consumers by next year. So, are you as excited as I am right now?  Hopefully some great developers will be able to come up with beta releases before the official thing comes out in a year or so. Oxford English Dictionary 2009 Word of the Year : Unfriend

The Oxford English Dictionary has published its list of new words that have been added this year, with a major amount of them coming from the worlds of social media and search. This morning the Oxford University Press announced that its 2009 Word of the Year is: unfriend . unfriend – verb – To remove someone as a ‘friend’ on a social networking site such as Facebook. As in, “I decided to unfriend my roommate on Facebook after we had a fight.” Oxford declared “unfriend” as its 2009 Word of the Year because of its “currency and potential longevity” according to Christine Lindberg, Senior Lexicographer for Oxford’s US dictionary program. “In the online social networking context, its meaning is understood, so its adoption as a modern verb form makes this an interesting choice for Word of the Year. Most “un-” prefixed words are adjectives (unacceptable, unpleasant), and there are certainly some familiar “un-” verbs (uncap, unpack), but “unfriend” is different from the norm. It assumes a verb sense of “friend” that is really not used (at least not since maybe the 17th century!). Unfriend has real lex-appeal.” Here are some other technologically driven words from the New Oxford American Dictionary 2009 : Technology hashtag – a # [hash] sign added to a word or phrase that enables Twitter users to search for tweets (postings on the Twitter site) that contain similarly tagged items and view thematic sets intexticated – distracted because texting on a cellphone while driving a vehicle netbook – a small, very portable laptop computer with limited memory paywall – a way of blocking access to a part of a website which is only available to paying subscribers sexting – the sending of sexually explicit texts and pictures by cellphone Check out the SEO Tools guide at Search Engine Journal .
