I can’t tell you how many jobs I’ve landed just by coming up in searches for my own name in Google. Since I am an Internet marketing professional having a web presence is a must. What if you’re not a marketing professional, is a web presence something you should work on and will it benefit you? The answer of course is…Yes! As with any business your brand is what people identify with. If you are a freelancer or a consultant you are your brand. When you Google your name what comes up? How many results are of you? How many are of someone else? If someone wanted to hire you and learn more about you what would they find? These are important questions. It should also be important to you that when a search is done on your name that information pertaining to you and your area of expertise shows up. Why? The top reason “people searches” are done on the net is to establish ones credibility. Not having anything is almost as bad as finding something bad. Does your Myspace page show a picture of you flipping off viewers? That could be damaging and costly to your image and reputation. You can keep your personal profiles private, just don’t have damaging content or photo’s showing in your limited profile. How To Brand

So you appear to do everything right: you have a fair amount of unique content and you seem to update your site regularly and Google seems to often visit your site… but there appear to be much fewer links in Google’s index than there are actually on your site. So what may that mean? 1. Are there really few pages in Google’s index? You might be wrong about how many URLs are actually in the index as there appears to be no definitive way to tell this. SITE: command may be inaccurate and Google Webmaster Tools reports may be unreliable. ! To make sure a URL isn’t really indexed, use your traffic analytics tool to see if there are no Google search referrals to this page. If the page is ranked, there should be nothing wrong with it. 2. Evaluate your content quality Google may keep visiting but failing to find pages useful enough to store them in the index. By “useful” content I mean unique text content longer than one or two sentences. 3. This may be just seasonal / temporal We’ve discussed this before and here’s a helpful forum thread about that: during some (”busy”) periods of the year Google may hold off indexing new URLs: …the “holiday search results” you know. While Google is in this mode (at least what we’ve seen in the past) the basic spidering, especially for young websites, continues but their indexing is often in a holding pattern. 4. Your site is too young: wait a bit Google treats new sites with suspicion. It doesn’t want to store data of the sites it doesn’t trust (or it may be storing the URLs already but not telling you to watch the trend). So just keep adding quality and relax. 5. Check for some stupid mistakes I’ve seen quite a few people coming to me for SEO diagnostics complaining of bad indexing rate and having Noindex meta tag all over the place. Conclusions? Looking back at the post, I can’t help noticing that there’s only one “true” issue listed (the content quality) – 2 of five points describe a perfectly normal situation and one is about improper diagnostics. So is bad indexing really not an issue most of the time? Sadly, it is often an issue. But to diagnose it, you’ll need more information: like cache rate of your site pages, possible Webmaster Tools errors, low rankings, etc. Like I said, the indexing rate is too hard to diagnose to signal of anything… Check out the SEO Tools guide at Search Engine Journal .
by Ron Cripps Affiliate marketing is an increasingly popular way to promote businesses on the internet. An affiliate is rewarded for each visitor or subscriber found through their efforts. Essentially, this is the modern adaptation to the finder’s fee. No commissions are paid to the affiliate unless there is a result such as a sale, making this a great option to online marketing online for the vendor. With the many advancements in software development it is now practical for many e-commerce sites to have their own affiliate platforms to manage their army of affiliates. There is also the option for vendors to use third party services such as Clickbank, Commission Junction or Shareasale as just a few examples to manage the affiliates and track their traffic and sales. This service usually entails paying a percentage of the sale to the third party for any sales made by the vendors site. Affiliate marketing has been the vehicle of success for many companies and the increase in revenue is usually 15-20% of a vendor’s online revenue. There is also the added benefit for the vendor of having many affiliate marketers linking to their websites talking about their products and services in forums and logs which is actually the best form of advertising they can get and it all comes to them for free. Affiliate marketing is usually only one level but as of late you can find some programs such as PPC Web Spy that allow different levels taking on the form of the network marketing vehicle. There are numerous affiliate marketing strategies available that can be offered by online merchants. A number of of the scenarios include your own software, online shopping carts that have affiliate functions, hosted services, and third-party affiliate networks such as Clickbank, Commission Junction or Shareasale . As the conception grows, a lot of merchants opt to change their terms and conditions to prohibit the affiliates from spamming or cookie stuffing and numerous other “Black Hat Marketing” practices. Previously, affiliates would often resort to spamming techniques sent through email. These not only irritated consumers, but it clogged the Internet with computer-generated mail. Many affiliates are now on board and create large volumes of generated web pages that are devoted to keywords and keyword phrases. This permitted the search engines to target their sites for the very keywords and products they were selling. After a number of months and many thousands of generated websites this also started to fill the internet with what is called junk sites and was later known as “Black Hat” tactics however… In February of 2006 Google had seen enough and released what was called the “Big Daddy” algorithm update which was designed to combat these generated spam sites. This update permitted Google to take out a large amount of duplicated content from the master search index. As a result of this Google update affiliate marketers had to become more proactive by ensuring their content was updated regularly and as unique as possible to hold a good listing in the search engines. Affiliate marketing is responsible for creating a lot of new businesses from corner to corner of the globe and is expected to evolve greatly. It offers an affiliate the chance to hitch on to a company that is already well established in the online world, and it becomes a win-win situation for everybody involved. The hopeful affiliate still has to realize that the adventure has to be taken seriously. While the merchant can offer training in the way of articles, emails, banners and even youtube video promotions as well as some timely advice, promoting the website or business/ service is left up to the affiliate, and this means understanding the policy of engagement. While the merchant can offer training in the way of articles, emails, banners and even youtube video promotions as well as some timely advice, promoting the website or business/ service is left up to the affiliate, and this means understanding the policy of engagement.
by Dirk Andersen Do you want to get more traffic into your sites? Well, a good way to do that is by embedding back links to your pages in articles that you write and submit to various online sites. Before you get too excited, you need to realize that this approach works spectacularly when done intelligently. You don’t have to spend a lot of money, but you will have to spend a great deal of time writing up and submitting your articles to the multitude of accessible article directories and e-zine lists. A good piece of this burden can be relieved if you use an article marketing submission tool, which can be had, gratis or for a fee, from online sources. Write an article with a high degree of quality in mind, and use all the knowledge you have accumulated about search engine optimization strategies to come up with a set of keywords that will effectively represent your particular bailiwick — and don’t forget that you want your article to be viewed as a rich resource for other authors. Once you have the article edited to your satisfaction, then insert the text into your article marketing tool, and launch it away Is there a problem with this? Oh, yes. If you submit the same exact article text to every existing article directory site, you may not get the plethora of back links you were expecting to get. The top search engines are designed to detect duplication of content and to back link only the “original”. The Solution: Continue to submit articles regularly. But don’t submit any single unique article more than once. That way you avoid duplication, and you are assured of getting a back link to your website in all your articles. If you can manage to publish at least one article each week, then over a few years, you will accumulate hundreds, possibly thousands of back links to your venues. Alright! Now, you are champing at the bit to write those articles and begin to reap the rewards of increased traffic through your website. And, well you should. Just the same, you need to keep some perspective. First of all, you are liable to wait a long time before you see any uptick in your traffic. Secondly, for those who have had some experience with this approach, you may remember it working well for you then gradually tapering off in its effectiveness. Let’s face it: the Web changes how it operates over time, and such changes can affect a lot of things, even your particular back link strategy.
