Google Chrome is Now the No. 3 Browser

Don’t look now guys, but only 16 months after it was officially released, Google Chrome is now the world’s no. 3 browser , based on Net Applications’ web browser usage data for December. What makes this more interesting is that Chrome has edged out Apple Safari which has been occupaying the third spot next to Internet Explorer and Internet Explorer. Google Chrome registered a 4.63% market share while Safari got 4.46% making it the no.4 browser for the first time. It is also worthwhile to note that Google just released the beta editions of Chrome for both Mac and Linux so it is most likely that this brought a sudden surge to its market share. While Safari may have slipped down to the no. 4 spot, it still managed to increase by 0.1%. Not unlike IE and Firefox which both suffered minor setbacks with 0.92% and 0.1% decrease in market share respectively. Joining Google Chrome and Apple Safari with increases in market share is Opera’s web browser which managed to get 2.4% of the browser market. Net Applications’ data was based on usage share from the 40,000 sites it monitors for clients. This amounts to 160 million unique visitors monthly. Google Updates News for Mobile

I just installed Google Mobile on my iPhone yesterday and was checking out the cool features that it offers. What’s good about this app is that it gives you quick access to various Google Mobile services including Google News. Speaking of News, Google just made some enhancements to this service which is available now for iPhone, Android and Palm Pre users. The enhanced Google News Mobile is now more consistent with the desktop version. So, if you’re so use to checking out Google News on a web browser Google tried to emulate the same look and feel to the Google News mobile. Google News Mobile now displays more stories, sources and images while maintaining the same look and feel as its desktop browser counterpart.  Another useful feature of this mobile app is the navigation links that will lead you to the different areas of your personalized Google News site. Best of all, all the customization you did on your Google News site will be carried over to the Google News mobile edition, that includes the custom sections . Google News for mobile is available in 29 languages and 70 editions, to check it out simply point your phone’s mobile web browser to http://news.google.com or install Google Mobile app like I did and access Google News from the apps section. Google Releases the Chromium Open Source Project

For simple folks like me anticipating the release of Google Chrome OS any day now, sad to say you won’t get a taste of it at least not in a year or so. But if you’re a developer, today’s Google announcement is for you.  Google has just made its Chromium Open Source Projec t  where  the consumer-side of Chrome OS will be built, available for developers and coders. The Chromim OS project which was released just now include current code base, user interface experiments and some initial designs. If you want to take part in the development of a better and more user-focused Chrome OS, these stuff are for you. And you can be more involved in this Open Source project by joining http://chromium.org. Meanwhile, us simple Google fans would for now be contend with knowing some more details about the Google Chrome OS and why Google is building it, if in case you still don’t know the reasons why. The main reason according to the Google Blog post is to make it faster to connect to the Internet starting from the time you boot up your computer (whether you are using those ultra-fast machines or a measly Acer netbook). The Google folks involved with the development of the Chrome OS have this notion that the major reason why we power up our computer is to connect to the internet – check emails, do social networking stuff, twitter and all.  And that if there is no Internet, we might not use the computer anymore. Somehow this is true. And so instead of using a separate OS to boot up the computer and go through all the processes that leads you to the process of firing up your browser, why not just eliminate the process where the PC’s OS does it work and make the web browser the computer OS as well. And that is the long and short of it – Google Chrome OS, if you don’t know yet is going to be your computer’s OS and web browser. Just imagine how faster it would be to connect to the Internet once Chrome OS is available for consumers by next year. So, are you as excited as I am right now?  Hopefully some great developers will be able to come up with beta releases before the official thing comes out in a year or so.
